Versailles revisited: Putin's crass display of decadence as he hosts 'Marie Antoinette' ball at G20 summit instead of world leaders working on ending the suffering in Syria


A lavish water and fireworks display (top right) met world leaders at the G20 summit in Russia. Models and actresses dressed in period style gowns (inset left , and left) greeted politicians including President Barack Obama, as Putin and Cameron sat side by side quaffing drinks, including champagne, and watching the impressive shows laid on for them.

The decadence of the affair, held in the impressive gardens of Peterhof Palace, sat at odds with the graveness of matters at hand - most notedly the Civil War tearing through Syria - and belies the simmering tensions and rivalry that have dogged the summit.
